How to Add a Vehicle to SENTRI: Steps, $42 Fee, 4-Car Cap
The short version of how to add a vehicle to SENTRI: add it in your TTP (Trusted Traveler Program) account, then wait for CBP approval before you drive it in a SENTRI lane. The first car is included in your application or renewal fee, and each car added later costs $42, up to 4 vehicles in all.
The approval rule is in the regulation. A SENTRI participant may use a vehicle in the dedicated lanes into the US from Mexico only if CBP has approved that vehicle (8 CFR 235.14). A car becomes usable in the lane once CBP approves it.
What does it cost to add a vehicle to SENTRI?
The CBP application fee is $120 and covers registering one vehicle, as long as you register it at initial application or at renewal. After that, each added vehicle costs $42. A member may register up to 4 vehicles, and fees apply to each additional one.
For the full fee picture, see How Much Is SENTRI?.
Worked example: one household, two paths
Take a household with four cars. Using only the $42 added-vehicle fee and the 4-vehicle cap:
| Path | Cars registered | Vehicle cost |
|---|---|---|
| Register one car at application or renewal | 1 | $0 |
| Add a second car later | 2 | $42 |
| Add a third car later | 3 | $84 |
| Add a fourth car later | 4 | $126 |
The first car is $0. The other three are 3 x $42 = $126. That is on top of the $120 application fee you pay either way. If you already know a second car will cross the border, there is no discount for adding it early: the sources list the same $42 fee for any car added after the application.
How to add a vehicle to SENTRI, step by step
- Log in to your TTP account. Add the vehicle there. If you are still applying or renewing, register your first car during that process, since it is included in the fee.
- Pay the $42 fee if the car is an additional one added after the initial application.
- Wait for CBP approval. CBP says vehicle enrollment processing can vary and may take up to 12 months. Do not use the new car in the SENTRI lane until it is approved.
- Bring the paperwork to the enrollment center. That means the vehicle registration and proof of U.S. auto insurance. LegalClarity says these are presented at the enrollment center to complete vehicle approval. The insurance must come from a company authorized to write insurance in the U.S. LegalClarity cites typical split limits of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident.
- Get the RFID decal. Approved vehicles are issued one (LegalClarity).

New plates or a new car
If your plates change, update the plate information in your account to avoid delays at the border. If you buy a new vehicle, add it to your account and wait for approval before using it in the lane.
Why the interview wait sets your timeline
Because the registration and insurance check happens at the enrollment center, the next available appointment decides how soon a new car can be approved. SENTRI processing can take 2 to 6 months depending on backlog, and one source cites 10 to 12 months as an average. Busy centers can book months out, and checking centers outside your area may turn up earlier dates.
Check SENTRI interview wait times to see how far out interviews are booking at each center. For how the approval clock works, read How Long Does SENTRI Approval Take?.
Adding a vehicle at renewal
You can apply to renew up to 1 year before the 5-year participation period ends (8 CFR 235.14). If you submit before your expiration date, you keep your membership until the application is processed. Register the vehicle at renewal and there is no extra fee. If you have a second or third car to add, the $42 fee applies to each of those.
Do not file a new application to fix a vehicle problem
Applying for a new SENTRI card through the application to fix a vehicle or card issue cancels your program membership, according to Upgraded Points. A lost card replacement costs $25. Use your existing account instead.
Getting an earlier interview slot
If the wait at your center is long, GlobalEntryTexts texts you when a Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI interview appointment opens at the enrollment centers you choose. It costs $25, paid once, for 30 days of monitoring, and you can watch up to 3 centers. You book the appointment yourself on ttp.dhs.gov. Nobody can promise you a slot. FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
A SENTRI member should be driving the vehicle they registered, not someone else's. A vehicle registered under an immediate family member does not need to be re-registered in your name. Every occupant of a car in the SENTRI lane must hold a SENTRI pass.
8 CFR 235.14 gives two redress routes: DHS TRIP and a request for reconsideration from the CBP Trusted Traveler Ombudsman. Our guide to DHS TRIP steps is at /blog/how-do-i-get-a-redress-number.
A damaged windshield needs a new SENTRI tag, which you can get by calling an Enrollment Center. Replacing a lost transponder costs $42, according to Upgraded Points.
The sources reviewed do not say. They do say that if you submit your renewal before your expiration date, you keep your membership until the application is processed, so renewing early avoids the question.
