I found an appointment in 2 days. Amazing! — Sarah L.

SENTRI approval usually takes 2 to 6 months from application to card, split between CBP vetting (typically 1 to 8 weeks) and the wait for an interview. Applications sent to manual review can take 12 to 24+ months, and CBP guarantees no timeline. Sources disagree (KAYAK says 10 to 12 months is common), so how long does SENTRI approval take for you depends on which clock you land on.

The useful split is two clocks. Clock 1 is CBP vetting, which ends in conditional approval, and you cannot speed it up. Clock 2 is the wait from conditional approval to your interview, and that one varies by enrollment center. For most applicants, Clock 2 is the part you can change.

How long does SENTRI approval take: the two clocks

CBP lists four steps on its SENTRI application page:

  1. Create a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account and apply, paying a non-refundable fee.
  2. CBP reviews the application.
  3. If you are conditionally approved, your TTP account tells you to schedule an interview at a SENTRI Enrollment Center. Each applicant books a separate interview.
  4. You attend the interview.

Clock 1 covers steps 1 and 2. Clock 2 starts when your account tells you to schedule, and it ends at your interview. After that, the card arrives by mail.

Timeline of four SENTRI steps: steps 1–2 are Clock 1 (vetting), steps 3–4 are Clock 2 (wait to interview), then the card arrives by mail.

Clock 1: vetting to conditional approval

The published figures disagree, so read them as ranges:

  • Don't Wait says conditional approval typically takes 1 to 4 weeks and up to 8 weeks in busy seasons. It credits the speed to SENTRI being run by CBP alone, unlike NEXUS.
  • Upgraded Points says up to 6 weeks.
  • Border Times says the background check is the longest part, taking a few weeks to several months. That check covers criminal, customs, immigration, law enforcement and terrorist databases, plus a 10-fingerprint check.

Then there is the long tail. KAYAK cites 12 to 24+ months for applications that need extra manual review. Forum posts on BajaNomad (September 2023) report anything from 2 days to 19 months, including a 16-month renewal. Treat those posts as anecdotes; they show how wide the spread is. Upgraded Points even contradicts itself: its body says 2 to 6 months and its FAQ says 10 to 12.

Clock 2: conditional approval to interview

This wait depends on the center you pick. Don't Wait (May 2026) described Otay Mesa as the busiest SENTRI center, often booking 4 to 8 weeks out. It put El Paso at about 30 to 40 days recently, and said Laredo and Brownsville often have shorter waits. Those are one guide's snapshots from May. Centers change week to week, so check today's figures on SENTRI interview wait times. The site's wait-time pages are live, and its Global Entry availability page shows each center's next bookable date (not whether a slot is open right now).

For one center's details, see Otay Mesa.

After the interview: the card

Don't Wait says you get verbal approval at the end of the interview and the card arrives by mail in 1 to 4 weeks. Border Times says the interview takes about 30 minutes. If you registered a vehicle, that registration can take up to 12 months to process, according to Don't Wait and Upgraded Points (which quotes CBP).

Worked example: adding up both clocks

Worked example for a new applicant. The inputs below come from the third-party guides cited above, not from our live pages. They are placeholders to show the arithmetic. Replace the interview-wait numbers with the current wait for your center on /sentri-wait-times on the day you read this.

ScenarioVettingInterview waitCard by mailTotal
Best case1 week4 weeks1 weekabout 6 weeks
Typical, Otay Mesa3 weeks4–8 weeks1–4 weeksabout 8–15 weeks
Typical, El Paso3 weeks30–40 days (about 4–6 weeks)1–4 weeksabout 8–13 weeks
Busy season, busiest center8 weeks8 weeks4 weeksabout 20 weeks
Manual review12–24+ monthsstarts after approval1–4 weeks1 to 2+ years

Here is what the table shows:

  • With the same 3-week vetting, the center choice moves the total by a few weeks. In this example, the El Paso total tops out about 2 weeks sooner than Otay Mesa (13 weeks against 15).
  • If the earliest interview date you can get at one center is 3 weeks away instead of 8, you cut 5 weeks from the total. That is the Clock 2 saving, and it is the only one in your hands.
  • Manual review dwarfs everything else. If CBP sends your application there, no choice of center changes the total much.

To estimate your own date, take the number of weeks until the earliest date at each center you could reach, add your vetting estimate (3 weeks is a reasonable midpoint from the guides above), and add 1 to 4 weeks for the card.

How to shorten the interview clock

  1. Schedule as soon as your TTP account says to. An early booking is the baseline.
  2. Compare every center you can reach. Laredo, Brownsville and El Paso sometimes show earlier dates than Otay Mesa. Check the SENTRI wait-times page before you commit to a drive.
  3. Take a later date, then try to move it earlier. A 2023 BajaNomad post describes accepting any appointment and logging in daily to move it up when cancellations appeared. We do not know when, or whether, slots are released at any particular time of day, so do not plan around one.
  4. Bring your passport and the documents your TTP account lists, so the interview is not delayed.

Renewals

Don't Wait says the background check typically re-runs in 1 to 3 months and most renewals do not need a new interview. Upgraded Points says renewing before your membership expires keeps it active while CBP processes the application. KAYAK says you can renew up to a year before expiry, and the new 5-year term starts the day after the current one ends.

Fee and program notes

The CBP fee is $120 for 5 years, the same for Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI since October 1, 2024. If your wait looks long, check whether another program fits. Border Times says Global Entry cards work in SENTRI pedestrian lanes but not in registered-vehicle lanes. KAYAK says Mexican nationals with SENTRI must apply separately for Global Entry. For the Global Entry timeline see how long Global Entry approval takes, and for the Canadian border see NEXUS wait times.

Hearing about an earlier date without refreshing the portal

Cancellations never show up on a static page. GlobalEntryTexts texts you when a Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI interview appointment opens at the enrollment centers you choose, so you can hear about an earlier date without checking the portal by hand. It costs $25, paid once, for 30 days of monitoring, and it is not a subscription. You can watch up to 3 centers in a 30-day window, and each purchase covers one program. Monitoring runs 24/7, but no texts go out between 10pm and 5am in the center's local time. You book the appointment yourself on ttp.dhs.gov. For the SENTRI version, see GlobalEntryTexts for SENTRI.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Usually not. Don't Wait says most renewals do not need a new interview and the background check typically re-runs in 1 to 3 months. Renewing before your membership expires keeps it active while CBP processes the application, according to Upgraded Points.

  • Don't Wait says verbal approval comes at the end of the interview and the card arrives by mail in 1 to 4 weeks. Vehicle registration is separate and can take up to 12 months to process.

  • Yes. CBP says each applicant must book a separate interview once conditionally approved. Minors are free when a parent or guardian is enrolled, per KAYAK, but they still need their own appointment.

  • No. Vetting is on CBP's side and no source we found offers a way to shorten it. What you control is how soon you book the interview and which center you choose.

  • Sources measure different things. The shorter figures describe typical cases, while KAYAK's 10 to 12 months and 12 to 24+ months reflect longer waits, including manual review. CBP does not publish a guaranteed timeline.
