Your known traveler number (KTN) lasts as long as the Trusted Traveler membership it belongs to, which is 5 years for Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI and TSA PreCheck. If you file a Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI renewal before the expiration date, your benefits, PreCheck included, keep working for up to 24 months while CBP processes it. That is the short answer to when does my known traveler number expire. The rest of this page shows how to find your exact date and how much time you really have to get through an interview queue.

What your KTN is and where to find it

Your KTN is your PASSID, the membership number. It is on the back of a Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI card and near the top of your account at ttp.dhs.gov. Chase describes it as nine digits. Telos says TSA PreCheck KTNs are typically 9 to 10 characters.

Ask the account: when does my known traveler number expire?

Don't work the date out yourself. Look it up:

  • Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI: sign in to your Trusted Traveler Programs account at ttp.dhs.gov and read the "expires" date in your dashboard. Remitly says the date also appears on the front of the card.
  • TSA PreCheck only: use TSA's online membership expiration lookup.

The reason to read it off the account: sources disagree on how the date is set. Chase says only "five years after approval." Remitly says Global Entry expires on your birthday in the fifth year, so a term can run a little over 5 years. Remitly's example: approved May 1, 2024, birthday September 20, expires September 20, 2029. The CBP FAQ we checked does not state a birthday rule. Your dashboard date is the one that counts.

Worked example: the expiration runway

Worked example: a Global Entry member's dashboard says the membership expires September 20, 2029.

  • Renewal window opens: September 20, 2028, 12 months before expiry (CBP lets you renew 1 year ahead).
  • Expiration date: September 20, 2029.
  • Grace period ends: September 20, 2031, 24 months after expiry, but only if the renewal was submitted before September 20, 2029.

How much time you have to finish an interview depends on when you file:

Filing dateWhere it fallsTime from filing to end of grace period
September 20, 2028Day one of the window36 months
March 20, 2029Six months into the window30 months
September 1, 202919 days before expiry24 months, 19 days
September 21, 2029Day after expiry0 months: benefits stop at once

Timeline: window opens Sept 20, 2028, membership expires Sept 20, 2029, and the 24-month grace period ends Sept 20, 2031.

Three details change how to read the table:

  • Chase says your new term starts on the old expiration date, so filing early costs you nothing.
  • Filing after the expiration date means no grace period (Remitly says this). Benefits stop, including the PreCheck that comes with Global Entry, until you are approved again.
  • The grace period is time to finish processing. It does not promise CBP will finish in that time, and processing times vary widely. See Global Entry turnaround time for processing detail.

Will your interview queue fit inside the grace period?

Not every renewal needs an interview. CBP says Global Entry renewals sometimes need none. Remitly says NEXUS renewal requires an in-person interview at a joint U.S.-Canada enrollment center, and SENTRI may require one. So the queue matters most for NEXUS members and for anyone CBP asks to interview.

To check the fit:

  1. Get your grace-period end date: your expiration date plus 24 months.
  2. Open the live wait-time page for your program: Global Entry, or the NEXUS or SENTRI wait-time page on globalentrytexts.com, and find your center.
  3. For Global Entry, the availability page shows each center's next bookable date. Count the months from today to that date.
  4. If that gap is well under your runway, the queue fits.

Hypothetical numbers, using the September 20, 2029 member:

  • Files September 20, 2028, center's next bookable date is 9 months out. Interview around June 20, 2029, before the membership even expires.
  • Files September 1, 2029, same 9-month queue. Interview around June 1, 2030, inside the grace period with about 15 months to spare.
  • Files September 21, 2029. The queue length no longer matters for continuity: benefits already stopped.

The availability page lists each center's next bookable date. It does not tell you whether a slot is open right now, and cancellations never appear on a page. Treat the date as a planning number, since your actual wait can differ. If you have no interview requirement, skip this check.

A shortcut for some Global Entry renewals

CBP says a conditionally approved Global Entry renewal can be finished through Enrollment on Arrival after an international flight. Completing it automatically cancels any interview you had scheduled. Details are in what Enrollment on Arrival is.

The cost of renewing

Renewal carries the same non-refundable CBP fee as a new application: $120 for Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI, valid for 5 years. Some parts of CBP's FAQ (last modified August 28, 2023) still show the old $100. A replacement card costs $25 per the CBP FAQ.

TSA PreCheck-only members

If your KTN comes from PreCheck alone, the rules differ. You can renew online up to 6 months early, and renewing members keep the same KTN. TSA sends reminders at 6 months, 3 months, 1 month and 2 weeks before expiry to members with an email or phone number on file. There is no CBP interview queue in that path.

What to do before the window opens

  • Read your exact expiration date in your TTP dashboard and write down the date 12 months earlier.
  • File on day one of the window if your program needs an interview. Every month you wait is a month off the runway.
  • Watch TTP for status emails after you submit.
  • Optional: during the grace period, print your TTP dashboard showing the renewal as pending, in case an officer asks. This tip comes from CBP's Traveler Communications Center as reported by a secondary source.

Hearing about earlier interview slots

If your center's next bookable date looks tight against your grace-period end date, GlobalEntryTexts texts you when a Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI interview appointment opens at the enrollment centers you choose. It costs $25, paid once, for 30 days of monitoring, and it is not a subscription. You can watch up to 3 centers for that price, and each purchase covers one program. You book the appointment yourself on ttp.dhs.gov, and nobody can promise you a slot will appear.
