To answer "how do i activate my global entry card": log into your Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) account at https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/ and click the Activate Membership Card button under the Program Membership(s) section. You have 30 days from the day you receive the card; after that it cannot be used at Trusted Traveler lanes (CBP FAQ).

The activation step takes a few minutes. The part that eats months is getting the interview that triggers the card in the first place, so the timeline below starts there.

How do i activate my global entry card? Three steps

Per the CBP info guide:

  1. Go to https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/ and log in to your TTP account.
  2. Click Activate Membership Card.
  3. Type your PASSID and the numeric portion of the Security Code from the back of the card, then click Next.

Your PASSID (your membership number) is printed on the back of the card. It also appears at the top of your TTP account page, so you can look it up if you are typing from memory.

The back of a membership card with the PASSID labeled and the numeric part of the Security Code highlighted.

One third-party source, insuremytrip, reports two extras that CBP's pages do not mention. It says activation may prompt you to set up a login.gov account, which asks for more biographical information and your PASSID. It also says the Security Code is 3 digits. It adds that if the activation options do not appear, you can click edit profile and add your PASSID in the last box. Treat these as reports from a third party and not as CBP instructions.

Worked example: from interview day to activation deadline

Worked example with assumed dates. Say you apply on January 6, pay the $120 CBP fee and get conditional approval on January 20. The earliest interview you can book is June 2, which is a 4-month wait. Your actual dates will differ.

DateWhat happensClock
Jan 6Apply and pay $120Application starts
Jan 20Conditional approval, then you book the earliest interviewInterview wait starts
Jun 2Interview and final approvalAbout 133 days after booking
Jun 16 to Jun 30Card arrives (CBP says 2 to 4 weeks after approval)14 to 28 days
Jul 16 to Jul 30Activation deadline, 30 days after the card arrives30-day window

The activation clock starts on the day the card reaches you. In this example the card and the activation window together take about 60 days at most. The interview wait takes about 133. The interview wait is the longest step in your timeline.

Bar chart: the interview wait is about 133 days, while card arrival (14 to 28 days) plus the 30-day activation window total about 60 days at most.

Arrival times vary by source. Wise says 7 to 10 business days after interview approval and insuremytrip says CBP quotes 6 to 8 weeks. This article uses the CBP figure of 2 to 4 weeks. The card goes to a US address, or to a designated US point of contact or enrollment center if you have no US address.

Where to look for an earlier interview

Two places to look:

  • Next bookable dates. The Global Entry appointment availability page shows each center's next bookable date, and the Global Entry wait times page has live wait times by center. For the other programs, see NEXUS wait times and SENTRI wait times. The availability page shows the next bookable date only. It does not show whether a slot is open right now.
  • Enrollment on Arrival. If you have a Conditional Approval, a valid passport and residency documents (not required for minors), plus a permanent resident card if applicable, you can complete the interview when you arrive on an international flight. A scheduled interview is cancelled automatically once Enrollment on Arrival is completed (CBP FAQ).

Cards are issued to US citizens, US lawful permanent residents and Mexican nationals. Green card holders can read the eligibility rules for permanent residents.

What the card does and does not do

Do not rush to activate because you think the card is your airport pass. For Global Entry at airports, you do not need it.

What it does:

  • It is accepted for lawful US entry at land and sea ports of entry.
  • Its RFID chip enables SENTRI and NEXUS lanes when entering the US at land borders. At southern land ports you must follow all SENTRI rules.

What it does not do:

  • It does not work at Global Entry kiosks. Use your passport or lawful permanent resident card there.
  • It does not work when entering the US by air.
  • It is not valid for entry into Canada via NEXUS lanes and kiosks.
  • It is not accepted as ID verification.

Lost card, renewals and changes

  • Replacement: $25. Requesting one deactivates the original. In your TTP account, go to Manage Membership, then Request for Global Entry Card.
  • Renewal: you can renew starting one year before expiration, using the Renew button on the TTP Dashboard. The fee is $120 and is non-refundable, and a membership lasts 5 years. Renewal may not require an interview.
  • Late renewals: if you submit before expiration, the CBP FAQ says benefits can continue up to 24 months after expiry. insuremytrip says 6 months. This article follows CBP, so check your own account for the exact date.
  • Name change: this needs a visit to an enrollment center.
  • Passport update: you can do this online in your TTP account.

Hearing about an earlier interview slot

If your next bookable date is months away, GlobalEntryTexts texts you when a Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI interview appointment opens at the enrollment centers you choose. It costs $25, paid once, for 30 days of monitoring, and you can watch up to 3 centers in that window. You book the appointment yourself on ttp.dhs.gov, and no one can promise you will get a slot.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You do not need the card to use Global Entry at an airport. Activation matters for expedited entry at SENTRI and NEXUS lanes entering the US, where the card's RFID chip is used. CBP's rule is that an unactivated card cannot be used at Trusted Traveler lanes.

  • CBP says new members receive the card 2 to 4 weeks after approval. Third-party sources quote anything from 7 to 10 business days to 6 to 8 weeks. If you are past 4 weeks, check the mailing address in your TTP account.

  • insuremytrip, a third-party source, says to click edit profile and add your PASSID in the last box so the activation options appear. It also says you may be prompted to set up a login.gov account. CBP's own pages do not describe either step.

  • No. A replacement costs $25, and requesting it deactivates the original. Request it in your TTP account under Manage Membership, then Request for Global Entry Card.
